As a freelance product designer, I collaborated with Swandoo and medical mobility experts Schuchmann to adapt the acclaimed Charlie car seat for children with disabilities—specifically those classified at GMFCS Level 3. The objective was to enhance accessibility and physical support, while preserving the intuitive functionality and refined visual language of the original design.
The development focused on improving ease of use and long-term comfort. Integrated magnetic harness holders allow the straps to remain open, enabling more independent and stress-free access. Ergonomic refinements were made to promote proper posture and support, all while maintaining a clean, child-friendly aesthetic.
Key features — such as an abduction wedge, an adjustable full-width armrest, and a carefully contoured footrest — were designed in close collaboration with Schuchmann’s clinical and technical team to ensure proper alignment and stability for children with motor impairments.
The result, Charlie Integral, is a thoughtfully reimagined car seat that enables safer, more dignified travel. It stands as an example of how inclusive design can extend the value of mainstream products to meet the needs of a broader and more diverse user group.
